Beauty in the Chaos
The best tip I can give parents that have family photos coming up - once you accept and embrace the chaos, your session will go a lot smoother! Don’t force things- we all know that toddlers don’t love being told what to do. There is no better way to ensure a fight than forcing your toddler to sit still and look at a camera and smile. Bring along some of their favorite things- snack, toy, book, or music. I’m a big fan of playing music during sessions with little ones. Give them time to warm up to their environment. There is no rush to get in and get started. Lower your expectations to control the situation. I like to say that family sessions are playdates in pretty clothes. So although we will eventually get the classic portraits of everyone looking at the camera and smiling, the session is more about capturing your love and connection with each other- not being stiff and giving forced smiles. During your session with Hello Jude, I’ll prompt you to play together; Have tickle fights, play patty cake, give eskimo kisses, have staring contests, etc. I hope you’ll HAVE FUN during your session and loosen up! Leave the rest to me. Instead of leaving the session wondering if I captured anything, I hope you leave your session saying- that was so fun, I didn’t even realize she was taking our photos half of the time! My job is to photograph you in your stage of life, chaos and all. With young kids it is inevitably full of imperfect moments and craziness. When you let go of your expectations for your family photos to be perfect you will allow for a beautiful story to be told through your session. Reality is, the chaos will soon be gone and the days of chasing toddlers through fields and settling temper tantrums won’t be your season forever. Remember that we all have chaos and there is joy in it! I’ll embrace the chaos with you and have fun along the way while capturing it beautifully.
The Schlosser Family
It always warms my heart when families come back from multiple milestones! This family is no exception to that as our third session just took place and they are getting ready to welcome another baby boy to their crew. I first met the Schlosser family at their oldest son Warren’s newborn session in the studio 2 years ago. I then photographed them again celebrating Warren’s first birthday and now for their maternity session in anticipation for their second child.
