I love documenting families in a playful way. By coming prepared with a handful of playful prompts it allows my families to relax and have a great time together without the pressure of performing in front of the camera. In today's blog, I'm outlining some of my go-to prompts for playful sessions. If you would like to see this content in video form, you can visit our Youtube channel! Here are my favorite prompts for playful photos.
Upside Down
Whether you are holding them upside down, tickling them, letting them do a handstand, having your children go upside down, we are able to capture incredible laughing images. This prompt is where we get the big belly laughs and expressions, and it encourages the families to have fun!
Fly
Holding the children, spinning them in circles, or moving them up and down, movement makes the photos more dynamic and draws your eye to the action, creating a playful shoot!
Sweet Details
We love detail shots! Holding hands, moms holding a baby on their hip, and capturing a baby's little toes are just a few of the examples we love to capture. These little features don't last, so we capture them while we can.
Walking
This allows the family to connect together and walk in the same direction, allowing us to capture a wider image. I also encourage parents to swing their kids, bump hips, play tag, and make walking a little more playful.
Explore
Use what is around you. If you are outside at the beach, in a field of wildflowers, or in the woods, use what you have to your advantage. Find shells, pick flowers, or dig for worms. Be adventurous and authentic to what your family enjoys.
Let Kids be Kids
If your kids want to stick their tongues out at their siblings, let them, or at least for a photo. If they want to play with each other, we say let them! If I need to pull out a rattle or wooden car to entertain a child, we will definitely encourage that.
Storytime
We give the family a minute to wind down using the storytime prompt. When we have tears in a session, this is a great prompt to get everyone back on track and capture better images. This prompt lets us create a story made up on the spot to engage the kids and parents.
Puppets
Whether it's one child or multiple kids we encourage the kids to play puppets with each other, or have the parents hold their hands and have them make the kids do silly things.
Snuggles
We love snuggling pictures for any type of session. These are sweet moments where we allow the family to snuggle up to one another for intimate family moments.
Tickling
This is a classic prompt when multiple kids are involved. This brings so many laughs and smiles and also allows for great detail shots.
Dancing
Put on the kid's favorite song and encourage the family to dance around. We love to ask the kids which parent dances better, and this always makes for a fun time.
Shoulders
A great way to add dimension and levels to photos is by having kids sit on the shoulders of a family member.
Nose Boops or Head hugs
Going nose to nose or forehead to forehead makes for the sweetest images, especially with mom!
These are some of our favorite Playful prompts, and we hope you love using them as much as we do. To see the YouTube video, please look below!
