Our Favorite Christmas Traditions with Our Children

Christmastime is one of my favorite times of the year. Our home is filled with Christmas cheer and the anticipation of the celebration of Jesus’s birth. Along with that comes a lot of fun Christmas Traditions.

  1. Christmas lights at Cornelia Park- This drive-through experience is one we do often (safe to say multiple times a week). We get in our Christmas jammies, fix some hot chocolate and turn on some Christmas tunes as we drive through the display of lights in our local park.

  2. Christmas Eve day hike- We typically go on some sort of hike with our good friends and their children. Something short and simple for the kids, but getting outside and enjoying nature during the week of Christmas.

  3. Snow day- Although this isn’t a guaranteed tradition, we have been lucky enough to have one snow day every year just about. Snow days are some of my all time favorite memories with our children and every year I pray for a good size snowfall here in North Georgia.

  4. Jammie Pictures- Almost every year I take photos of the kids in their jammies and frame one for my mom. She loves displaying them on the mantle during the Christmas season. The biggest challenge is finding matching pajamas for the kids these days!

  5. White Christmas- In the past we have traveled to my hometown of Fort Walton Beach, FL for Christmas and have enjoyed our own version of a “white Christmas” on the white sandy beach.

  6. Elf on the Shelf- I know this isn’t for everyone but it has become such a fun tradition now for our kids. My mom works year-round dreaming up ideas for our elves and sewing costumes for them. The boys are at the age when they now guess what our elves Ryder and Jolly will do next and are mesmerized by them.

  7. Visiting Santa at the local library- We love this little town library of ours. We usually go listen to some Christmas stories and then meet with Santa.

  8. Advent Calendar- This tradition looks a little different from year to year. One year we opened a new ornament every day of the month and one year the boys got new Christmas books every day. This year a simple mini candy cane is waiting for the kids each day in the calendar pockets.

  9. Going Christmas present shopping- Each year we run to Walmart as a family the week of Christmas. I take a kid and a cart and Nate takes the other kids and a cart and we split up to let the kids pick out presents for the other kids and then we switch. We give them a budget and let them find a toy that they think their siblings would like. We also let them help wrap the presents. Usually they spill the beans about what present they bought before we even make it to the house, but it’s all part of the fun.

  10. Decorating the house- This year our boys are now at the age where they actually want to help decorate and can without making too big of a mess. Jude was so excited to decorate the tree this year and aside from the garland pretty much single-handedly hung every ornament.

As my kids grow I can only imagine the kind of traditions we will continue to make around the Holiday season!
