I do my best to create opportunities for their personalities to shine and to truly capture them in a way that gives you a glimpse into their childhood. Here are three tips to encourage play and capture memorable moments: Choose a Comfortable Setting
When it comes to documenting your family, this can be a big one. If you have a super adventurous and curious little one, the studio may not be the best fit. Although it is an incredible and beautiful space, you may be better suited with an outdoor session where we can run and play and explore. For little ones that are a bit more shy or easy going, the studio is a great environment. In-home sessions are also a great option to help little ones feel at ease and can lend a hand at true lifestyle documentation of your little ones.
Incorporate Playful Props and Toys
I love introducing age-appropriate props or toys that can engage the toddler's attention. Props like bubbles, blocks, cars, puppets or soft toys can add an element of playfulness to the photoshoot. Allow the toddler to interact with the props naturally, capturing candid moments of joy and curiosity.
Follow Their Lead and Be Patient
Toddlers are naturally curious and full of energy, so it's important to be patient and go with the flow. Instead of trying to pose them in specific ways, or making them sit still for too long, follow their lead and capture spontaneous moments. Engage in interactive play, such as peek-a-boo or chasing bubbles to evoke genuine expressions and smiles.
Bonus Tip: Capture Candid Moments
Some of the most beautiful and playful images come from candid moments. Let the toddler be themselves, whether it's laughing, exploring, or even showing a bit of mischief. Candid shots often reflect the genuine essence of the child's personality.
Encourage a relaxed and positive atmosphere during the photography session, and be prepared to capture those unexpected, heartwarming moments.
Walker's Studio Session
When I think about Walker I immediately think of his sweet demeanor. I think of the way he snuggles his mommy and holds onto her necklace, the way he giggles when his daddy tickles his belly, and the way his hand wraps around his parents fingers. During this milestone birthday family session I wanted to capture those sweet moments. To do so I encouraged a lot of play, snuggles, and time to just be together and allow their natural personalities come out. When this happens, magic happens and personalities begin to really shine.
